Conn. DCF commissioner testifying in Washington

Connecticut's top child welfare official will be testifying before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee on the state's efforts to prevent child sex trafficking.

Department of Children and Families Commissioner Joette Katz is set to appear before the committee in Washington Tuesday. Katz is supporting federal legislation to require states to improve how they respond to child sex trafficking.

Katz says 200,000 children in America potentially are trafficked into the sex trade each year. About 130 children in Connecticut have been confirmed as victims of sex trafficking since 2008.

She says DCF has been collaborating with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies over the past two years to improve response to the problem. State lawmakers this month also approved a bill increasing penalties for the purchase and trafficking of minors.
