SAN LUIS, AZ (CBS5) -

A new mother has U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers to thank for helping deliver her newborn child.

Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Teresa Small said the 20-year-old woman from the U.S. was crossing the border through the San Luis port with two of her siblings and they told officers the woman was in labor.

Small said CBP officers with paramedic training assisted until EMS personnel arrived from Rural Metro Fire-Ambulance.

Once she gave birth, she was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center and both the mother and her child are in good health as of Tuesday night.
