NEWINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

A Newington neighborhood near the town's high school was in lockdown mode Thursday after someone called 911 to report hearing a gunshot.

Emergency officials swarmed the area and asked officials at Newington High School and Saint Mary School to secure the buildings while officials evacuated neighbors near the scene and investigated the reports of gunfire.

Within an hour police secured the scene and said they found a man inside an apartment dead with a single gunshot wound.

The man's identity hasn't been released and police are continuing to investigate.
