The future of the former Hickory Hollow Mall could be ice cold. Mayor Karl Dean announced plans Monday to bring a community hockey rink to the property now called the Global Mall at The Crossings.
It comes just a week after a lot of people in Antioch shared concerns about the re-branded mall. They worry new stores aren't drawing enough foot traffic, and parts of the mall have fallen into disrepair.
However, these newly unveiled plans that will mean more than just shopping.
Dean also announced an expanded library, regional community center and park space will be built at the city's new mixed-use complex.
The new hockey facility will be 86,000 square feet with two rinks open for community groups, Metro students and adult and youth leagues.
"We expect this hockey center to be a destination point for young hockey players from all over the Middle Tennessee area and even the southeast region," Dean said.
The city is shelling out $14 million in bonds to build the facility. The Nashville Predators will operate the hockey rink and pay an annual $350,000 users fee.
City leaders and neighbors hope the development will breathe new life into an area that needs it.
