Waterbury firefighters rescue 2 from flooded river

Waterbury firefighters rescued a city couple from the rain-swollen Naugatuck River after their canoe capsized in dangerous waters.

Firefighters said that they extended a ladder from a ladder truck over the river and pulled Francisco and Shawnda Barbosa to safety Sunday evening. Shawnda Barbosa was brought to a hospital with possible hypothermia shock, and Francisco Barbosa refused medical treatment.

A bicyclist heard the couple's screams for help and alerted authorities. Fire officials say they arrived shortly after 6:30 p.m. and found the couple trapped in rushing water about 30 feet from shore. The rescue took less than an hour.

Rivers across the state have swelled to dangerous levels because of heavy rains within the past month.
