The suspect accused of shooting of a 7-year-old boy in Atlanta has turned himself in.

Elrico Smith, 28, was wanted by Atlanta police on aggravated assault charges in a shooting that happened near Mango Circle and Monteel Drive Northwest Sunday evening while Darious Calhoun Jr. was riding his bike.

Police put out Smith's photo to the media Monday morning and just hours later he turned himself in.

Residents in the neighborhood where the shooting happened said they're still confused by it.

"I just don't know what things are coming to, I really don't," said resident Mildred Ousley.

She said the fact that it involved an innocent young child just out playing on his scooter only made it worse.

"It's sad for a grown up to get shot, but a little kid. That's just downright awful," said Ousley.

She wasn't the only one to think that. Police said the community immediately stepped up and starting talking.

"Witnesses have helped a lot on this case. It didn't take any time for our investigators to find out who this person was," said Kim Jones with the Atlanta Police Department.

And when Smith turned himself in, residents said it was a big relief.

"If a person is bold enough to shoot somebody, to shoot in a neighborhood where people are walking around, ain't no telling what he might do," said Ousley.
