A heartbreaking photograph is making its rounds on the internet that shows a child in a wheelchair that has been separated from the rest of his classmates in a class photo.
According to an article in the The Province, mother Anne Belanger said she was disgusted when she received her son Miles' photo last month.
"Look at the angle that he was in," she said. "He's ostracized. He wants to be part of the gang so much."
Belanger said her son has muscular atrophy, which is a genetic disease that attacks nerve cells and weakens muscles throughout the body.
Don Ambridge, Miles' father, said he was the first to see the photograph of his son and said that when he saw it he felt humiliated for him.
"For some reason," he said. "It makes me feel even worse that he's so happy in the picture. I think it's because he's still innocent. He's still naive how other people can treat him."
Belanger said she posted the photograph on the Facebook page of the company that took the photograph, Lifetouch Canada, and they took it down citing privacy laws but would let management know.
Belanger said she wasn't satisfied with that, blackened out the faces of the other children and reposted it.
Miles' school, Herbert Spencer Elementary, in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, also contacted the company after it became aware of what happened, but Lifetouch Canada didn't want to admit anything was wrong with the picture.
Belanger said it took some coaxing, but the company agreed to retake the photo. She said she blamed the photographer and school for the mistakes, but said she was satisfied with the school's actions when the photograph was seen and said the photographer was solely to blame.
