Secretary of the State Denise Merrill is swearing in the newest member of the Connecticut General Assembly.
Republican Sam Belsito of Tolland is scheduled to take the oath of office on Wednesday in the Hall of the House of Representatives. Merrill will deliver the oath to the recently elected representative of the 53rd Assembly District, which includes Ashford, Tolland and Willington.
Belsito defeated Democrat Anthony Horn by 554 in a May 14 special election. He fills the seat vacated by former Democratic Rep. Bryan Hurlburt, who resigned in April to accept an appointment to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Services Bureau.
Belsito is a men's clothing store owner. He serves on the Tolland Town Council. State Republicans claimed his victory was a referendum on Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.
