Is eyeball licking the new teen craze?

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

It sure seems disgusting but eyeball licking appears to be a new way to show affection.

It is especially popular in Japan among middle school students.

Not only is it gross -- it is dangerous.

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but eyeball licking? It seems to be the latest fad, that is growing worldwide.

It may have started with a music video by the Japanese band, Born, which features a woman licking the eyeball of a man.

Pretty disgusting and not at all good for the health of your eye, according to Cleveland Clinic Ophthalmologist Dr. Rishi Singh.

"Those bacteria have been known to lead to things like corneal ulcers and issues like conjunctivitis can come from the introduction of bacteria to that space," explained Ophthalmologist Dr. Rishi Singh.

You can bounce back from an eye infection but Dr. Singh says your tongue can, very easily, actually scratch someone's cornea, which is responsible for two thirds of our vision.

Pay attention to the warning you can go blind.

"The layers of the eye are very important to it's function. When you take a mechanical thing and just wipe it off it really hurts the eye and you can imagine taking a tongue or any other sort of object and scratching it can really cause some significant damage to the eye," said Ophthalmologist Dr. Rishi Singh.
