SALEM, CT (AP) -

State police have identified a trooper who shot a man to death in Salem as the man's home burned down.

Authorities say Trooper Patrick Hawes shot 59-year-old Robert Bergeson Tuesday as Bergeson charged at police while waving a club and ignoring commands to drop the weapon.

Hawes is a seven-year veteran of state police. He was placed on administrative duty under normal protocol for officer-involved shootings while officials investigate.

Investigators are trying to determine whether Bergeson intentionally set fire to his home and an attached garage.

Bergeson and his ex-wife's divorce was finalized last month. He was sentenced to two years of probation earlier this month for beating and choking her last September. Police say his wife suffered head injuries and broken ribs.
