STAMFORD, CT (WFSB) -

The missing 12-year-old boy died after he was pulled from the water near Cove Island Park in Stamford Friday evening.

Witnesses told police that they saw the boy, who was later identified as Rashad Gross, disappear underwater between the Long Island Sound and Holly Pond just before 2 p.m.

After crews used a sonar-equipped boat, a Coast Guard helicopter and divers, Gross was located in the water, near the Long Island Sound around 5 p.m.

Gross was rushed to Stamford Hospital where he died a short time later.

Investigators said Gross was swimming with friends when he went underwater and disappeared.

"Several of the youths had trouble getting back to the shore because of the strong current and they noticed that Gross was missing," police said in a statement.

Police marine units from Stamford and Norwalk were assisted Darien and Stamford fire departments.

The incident remains under investigation by police.
