The federal government will be turning over ownership of another Long Island Sound lighthouse to the New London Maritime Society.
The U.S. General Services Administration is planning a ceremony in New London on Thursday to give the deed for the 135-year-old Race Rock Lighthouse to the historical group, which acquired the New London Harbor Light from the government in 2010. The group applied for ownership of the Race Rock Light last October.
The Race Rock Light was completed in 1878 just southwest of Fishers Island, N.Y., in a dangerous, fast-moving part of the Sound called The Race, where many ships had run aground. It still operates today.
The government is giving the lighthouse to the Maritime Society for free, with some conditions including maintaining public access.
