WEST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

A West Haven woman was arrested Tuesday after police said they found her child wandering in the middle of the street unsupervised.

Around 10 a.m., police said they were called to the area of 76 Greta Street after the child was found wandering alone outside.

A police officer in the area noticed the 3-year-old in the road wearing only pajamas. Officers asked the child where he lived and if he would show them his favorite toys.

They said the child then led them to his home and police entered it, announced who they were and no one responded.

They asked the child where his mother was, and he led them upstairs to her bedroom.

Inside police found the mother, Misty Nelson, along with another man who identified himself using four different names and another child.

Police explained how and why they entered the apartment, and Nelson placed the blame on another adult by saying they must have left the door open and the child wandered away.

Nelson, 26, was arrested and charged with risk of injury to a minor.

The other man, identified as Brandon Stovall, was arrested for criminal impersonation and felony arrest warrants out of West Haven, New Haven and Stafford, VA.

The state Department of Children and Families was also notified of the situation.
