Bank robber "Home Town Bandit" Walter David Garcia, 23, of Sinaloa, Mexico has been sentenced to 16 years in federal prison.
Garcia robbed seven banks from Aug. 1, 2011 through April 12, 2012 in Phoenix, Sun City and Surprise. He was dubbed the Home Town Bandit because he would wear local sports team paraphernalia during the robberies.
During one of the robberies Garcia had a handgun and he is connected to two carjackings linked to the robberies.
Previously Garcia had pleaded guilty to four counts of bank robbery, two counts of armed bank robbery and one count of use of a firearm during a crime of violence.
The FBI and its Bank Robbery Task Force led the investigation long with the Surprise Police Department. The Bank Robbery Task Force is a group venture between the FBI, the Phoenix Police Department, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, the Mesa Police Department, the U.S. Attorney's Office and the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. Their focus is to investigate and apprehend bank robbers in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
