SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield Police Department's K-9s have been awarded bullet and stab protective vest thanks to the efforts of  three local animal loving businesses.

Vested Interest in K-9s Inc., a local non-profit organization, donated the vests to four of the newest Springfield K9s; Grom, Cairo, Blek and Fix.

Each police dog was sized for their vest which took about 3 months for delivery.

"We are grateful to Especially for Pets, the Pet Food Shoppe and the many animal lovers who made this gift of protection available for the Springfield K9s", said the organizations President, Sandy Marcal.

The organization, an all volunteer charity located in East Taunton, MA. provides bullet and stab protective vests for law enforcement dogs throughout the United States.

Each vest costs $950.00, and has a 5-year warranty.

The Springfield Police Department has a total of seven K-9 Officers and two additional K-9's will be on the street this September totaling three K-9's per shift.
