Preservation group takes ownership of light

The New London Maritime Society has taken ownership of the Race Rock Lighthouse from the U.S. Coast Guard.

A ceremony was held Thursday in New London.

The light is located about 8 miles off New London between Fishers Island and the northeastern end of Long Island Sound. It was built in the 1870s to warn sailors approaching the dangerous reef near Race Point.

It was automated by the Coast Guard in 1978, and gained some notoriety when it was featured on the television show Ghost Hunters.

It is the latest of 96 lighthouses that have been taken over by preservation groups or sold at public auction under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act.
