Ice cream lovers got to celebrate quite a milestone on Saturday, which marked the 40th anniversary of Steve Herrell making and selling ice cream in the Bay State.
Herrell opened his first ice cream shop near Boston back on June 29, 1973.
After selling that business, he opened Herrell's in Northampton in 1980.
Herrell told CBS 3 that he never could have imagined the success he has had over the last four decades.
"I had no idea when I first opened on June 29, 1973, that it would turn into a national phenomenon," said Herrell. "I was hoping to run one good store and do a good job. I hoped it would be well accepted, and the rest is history."
Herrell is credited as the first person to grind candy bars and other treats into ice cream.
His original recipes have earned him national recognition.
