OLD SAYBROOK, CT (WFSB) -
Search crews continued their search for a father of 10 who went missing after falling overboard on a fishing trip over the weekend near the mouth of the Connecticut River.
Conditions were not ideal for the search Monday because of poor visibility, and officials from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the water currents are also bad because of all the recent rainfall.
The search Monday has been focused at the mouth of the Connecticut River between Old Lyme and Fenwick Point.
DEEP officials said the United States Coast Guard is using charts to determine where the man may have ended up once he went overboard Sunday night, and that's where search crews are focusing the search Monday.
The incident was reported at about 8 p.m. Sunday when the man, who fishes in that spot about two times a week, was reeling in a Bluefish, lost his pole and went overboard after it.
"It's terrible. It really , really is terrible," said Russ Daniels of Deep River. "You think you're doing the right thing and something God forbid, happens. And it really is a shame, it really, really is."
Officials said another adult and two children were also on the boat.
Old Saybrook firefighters said another boat came across the other adult who had also gone in the water, who said that man was missing.
The missing man is described as a 51-year-old father of 10 from West Springfield, MA.
The other three people who had been in the boat with him were all taken to shore safely and checked out by medical personnel.
Crews searched for the man for hours after he went overboard, but came up empty.
Fire boats from Old Saybrook, Old Lyme, Westbrook, Clinton and Essex searched the Sound while the Haddam Fire Department joined in with special sonar equipment.
"We're hoping that he either found a spot on land, there is some marsh around there, and hopefully we can find him," said Capt. Ryan Healy of State Environmental Conservation Police.
The United States Coast Guard brought down one of its boats from New London, and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Connecticut State Police responded as well.
Old Saybrook and Old Lyme also had its police boats in the water, while other crews searched the land along the shoreline.
Officials are not yet releasing the missing man's name Monday night. Rescue crews said he has an extensive family.
