US report positive on proposed new Arizona mine

TUCSON, AZ (AP) -

A new report by the U.S. Forest Service offers a favorable assessment of a proposed southern Arizona mine, saying it would comply with key environmental requirements and should be approved.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, the service's draft environmental impact statement says the proposed Rosemont Mine would meet federal air-quality standards and not jeopardize jaguar and other endangered species.

However, the service says it is still considering the mine's compliance with some requirements that include the U.S. Clean Water Act.

The mine would operate in the Santa Rita Mountains southeast of Tucson, extracting copper, molybdenum and silver.
