After leading police on a high speed chase with his car headlights off, Nathan Araujo was arrested by police Saturday night.
According to state police, Araujo's car was observed traveling 83 miles per hour in a posted 55 miles per hour zone along Route 8 near Derby. Before troopers could stop the car, Araujo pulled over on his own and stopped in the shoulder near exit 13 of the northbound side of the highway.
A state police trooper exited his car and began a talking with Araujo. Before the trooper could continue the investigation, Araujo sped away at a high rate of speed north on Route 8 turning off his lights.
By the time the Trooper entered his vehicle, the accused vehicle was well ahead and out of sight. The trooper continued north on Route 8 and observed the car ahead using its break lights. The car turned off the highway and parked in a handicapped spot in the nearby Shop Rite plaza.
The trooper then saw Araujo attempting to hide near a parked van. As the Trooper exited his vehicle, Araujo fled on foot towards the wood line of the shopping center. The Trooper's State Police K-9 (Titan) apprehended Araujo, and he was taken into custody.
Further investigation revealed Araujo to be in possession of six gallon-sized plastic zip lock bags and multiple sandwich sized plastic sandwich bags containing marijuana. Police determined he was in possession of more than 3 pounds of marijuana. Araujo also was in possession of electronic scales and about $3,500.
Araujo was charged with misuse of plates, no insurance, reckless driving, operating with a suspended license, eluding an officer, interfering with an officer, possession of a controlled substance greater than 4 ounces and possession with intent to sell controlled substance.
Araujo posted a $100,000 bond and will appear in superior court in Derby on July 16.
