State seeks to boost electric vehicle stations

MIDDLETOWN, CT (AP) -

Connecticut is trying to more than double the number of electric vehicle charging stations by the end of the year.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Department of Transportation said Tuesday that $200,000 to install charging stations will be awarded to proposals that provide the most matching money, are most accessible to the public and place charging stations in geographically diverse areas.

The goal is to increase the number of charging stations from 81 now to 200 by the end of 2013.

State officials say transportation accounts for nearly one-third of the energy consumed in Connecticut and produces about 40 percent of the state's greenhouse emissions.

The commissioners of the two agencies are scheduled to attend an electric vehicle expo at Middlesex Community College in Middletown Tuesday.
