Riverfest rescheduled for July 18 - WFSB 3 Connecticut

Riverfest rescheduled for July 18

Posted: Updated:

Officials with Riverfront Recapture announced Tuesday that the Riverfest fireworks that were postponed because of flooding have been rescheduled for July 18 at 9:30 p.m.

The response on the WFSB Facebook page has been less than favorable about the decision to hold the fireworks display on a weeknight, and it's also the same night Justin Bieber is performing a sold out show at the XL Center in Hartford.

"We appreciate everyone's patience as we have worked to come up with a new date for the fireworks," said Riverfront Recapture President and CEO Joe Marfuggi. "With so much going on this time of the year, it was a challenge coordinating available dates with all of the organizations and service providers that are involved."

Numerous agencies support Riverfest, including the city of Hartford, East Hartford police, fire and public works, Connecticut State Police, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The original festival, which took more than a year to produce, consisted of hundreds of entertainers, vendors and activities.

"With such short notice and due to conflicting commitments, it is just not realistic to reassemble a new program for an event the size of Riverfest," said Riverfront Recapture Director of Programs and Events Charlie Myers.

For that reason, officials said the rescheduled event will be fireworks only.

"The July 18 date is subject to approval from the various permitting agencies," Myers said in a statement, "but we have received tremendous support thus far and we do not anticipate any major issues."
