The search for a 5-year-old girl continued for a third day in the Connecticut River Tuesday. Authorities said the child fell off a dock in South Hadley Saturday night and disappeared. She is presumed dead. Witnesses told police several adults saw it happen and dove into the water after her, but she could not be found.
According to officials, the girl was the youngest of a family who was visiting the area from California. They had gathered on the waterfront to watch a fireworks display.
Firefighters from Springfield and Agawam were conducting a visual search of the river by boat Tuesday. They were concentrating on an area between the South End Bridge and the Massachusetts Turnpike bridge in case her body had floated downstream.
Springfield Fire Department Public Information Officer Dennis Leger, executive aide to fire Commissioner Joseph A. Conant, said the search was difficult because of high water and muddy conditions reducing visibility.
Authorities said they would continue the search until her body was found. They planned on resuming the search Wednesday. Her identity was not being released.
