TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
A Phoenix couple in custody in Pinal County on smuggling, assault and endangerment charges may soon be facing murder charges after the death of one of the people they were carrying in the back of a box truck, according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.
According to a news release, Nathan Lamb, 25, and his girlfriend, Elizabeth Kay, 25, told investigators they were taking a group of undocumented migrants from Douglas to Phoenix on July 7. They said they stopped at the Bowlins Travel Center at 16543 Camino Adelante (at I-10 and Picacho Peak) after they heard pounding and banging sounds coming from the cargo area.
Eight of the occupants of the truck were taken to local hospitals suffering from heat-related symptoms.
One of the patients died overnight, so the Sheriff's Office has said it will request felony murder charges against Lamb and Kay.
