A Las Vegas pet owner says she is furious after a Metro officer ran her dog over, killing it.
It happened on May 21 near Lamb and Las Vegas boulevards when the dog, Freckles, jumped a fence.
Freckles' owners told FOX5 they want accountability and better officer training from Metro when it comes to handling dogs and understanding their behavior.
However, Metro said they believed the animal to be an immediate threat to children.
On Thursday afternoon, dozens of demonstrators picketed in front of the Regional Justice Center in downtown Las Vegas where Freckles' owner appeared for an animal at large charge.
A judge dismissed that charge.
Freckles' owners say that the dog, an Australian Shepherd mix, was being taunted by kids who were throwing rocks at him. Freckles jumped a fence and began chasing those kids.
A Metro officer witnessed the events and ran the dog over in the street. Police claim the dog was viciously attacking young children. Freckles' owner said those kids had no injuries of any kind.
Freckles was dragged for half a block, later dying at a pet hospital.
"Everybody loved this dog. He was a part of the family. He was my son and they need to know that they cannot take furry family members from us like this. It's an outrage," said Freckles' owner, Sarah Hecht.
When FOX5 contacted Metro for this story, they said they cannot comment as a use of force internal affairs investigation is underway.
Hecht said she believes the dog would not have harmed the children.
