Posted: Updated:

Fire officials determined a white powdery substance found in mail at an apartment complex in Avon Friday evening was not hazardous.

Firefighters were called to the Avon Mill Apartment complex at 4:44 p.m. for a report of hazmat situation.

The area where the powder was located was quarantined as a precaution, and two occupants of the apartment were decontaminated.

The Capital Region Hazardous Materials Team determined the substance was not dangerous.

There were no reported injuries.

By 7:30 p.m., the quarantine was lifted, and people were able to return to the apartment.

The Avon Fire Department was assisted by firefighters in Simsbury and UConn, as well as officials from the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection and U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
