NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -

A New Britain woman is accused of taking thousands of dollars of unemployment benefits under her deceased husband's name.

Laura Jean LaPointe, 46, was arrested and charged with second-degree identity theft, first-degree larceny by defrauding a public community and unemployment compensation fraud.

Police said LaPointe took $9,435 from unemployment benefits from February to December 2012 by using her dead husband's name, officials with the Division of Criminal Justice said.

LaPointe was arraigned at New Britain Superior Court Monday and her next court appearance is Aug. 16.

The case is under investigation by the Division of Criminal Justice and the Department of Labor.
