Two Navy men were arrested on Saturday after Ledyard police found explosive material in their car.

During a routine patrol, police said they found a vehicle parked in a hiking area off of Avery Hill Road. When officers searched the vehicle they discovered a small amount of explosive material.

According to police, the search led them to a storage facility in the Gales Ferry section of Ledyard. There they found a larger amount of explosive materials.

State police were called to the area and secured the materials.

The two men, John Mallow and Gary Braun, are both Navy men at the Submarine Base in Groton.

Mallow was charged with possession of explosives, manufacture of bombs and possession of fireworks.

Braun was charged with possession of explosives and possession of fireworks.

Both men were arraigned at New London Superior Court on Monday.

Mallow and Braun were released from police custody with the promise to appear and their next scheduled court appearance is on July 29.
