HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A man in court for running over an 82-year-old woman in Hartford last week is now in the custody of the federal government.

Victor Morales, 21, was immediately turned over to immigration officers after his arraignment in Hartford Superior Court.

He's an illegal immigrant, according to what the federal investigators told Channel 3 Eyewitness News last week.

Morales' court proceeding was fast, but far from easy.

Within seconds of his arraignment on evading charges, Morales, who Eyewitness News has learned is from Mexico, was hauled off by federal immigration officers.

His attorney Corey Brinson said that had to do with his illegal status in the USA.

Morales was arrested last Thursday after the C-Town employee backed a van over 82-year-old Maria DosSantos in Hartford's Parkville neighborhood.

Police said that after striking DosSantos, Morales took off into the C-Town store.

After at least 30 minutes, police said Morales appeared and told police in Spanish that he was the driver but didn't see DosSantos when he started to back the van up.

A forklift was needed to lift it off her so she could be taken to a local hospital, police said.

According to police, a security camera mounted to the side of the C-Town grocery store recorded the entire incident.

His charges include evading, reckless driving and driving without a license.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim Mrs. (Dos)Santos," Brinson said. "This is nothing more than a tragic accident. My client did call 911."

Brinson said Morales was released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents by day's end and will be wearing an ankle bracelet with 24-hour electronic monitoring.

DosSantos remains in stable, but critical condition at Saint Francis Hospital.

"She was so happy to celebrate her birthday," said friend Gracina Pinho.

Morales is married to a woman, who apparently lives within Hartford. No one was there when Eyewitness News went to the home for a comment.
