MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A man who told Mesa police he had been poisoned by a dart and then held a 2-year-old child on the ledge of an upstairs window early Tuesday morning was in jail on suspicion of child endangerment.

Marco A. Carrillo, 31, called 911 and in Spanish told the dispatcher he had a dart in him and that he thought he had been poisoned about 2:35 a.m., according to a Mesa Police Department report.

Officers said they tried to speak to Carrillo through a front window of the apartment near Stapley Drive and McKellips Road, but he refused to open his door and continued to yell for help.

More officers arrived as Carrillo broke out an upstairs window, pushed out the screen and held the visibly upset child on the ledge, according to the report.

Officers broke into the house through the back door, and while an officer in the front distracted Carrillo, they were able to grab the child and capture Carrillo.

Carrillo was taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary reasons and was later booked into jail on charges of child endangerment and disorderly conduct.

Police contacted Child Protective Services and were told the child's mother was in jail on a drug sales charge. CPS took custody of the 2-year-old.
