An east side homeowner shot and killed an armed intruder during a terrifying attack at his Cleveland home.
It happened Monday on East 178th Street off Nottingham Road just before 12:30 a.m. An attack in this neighborhood is rare.
The preliminary investigation reveals that the homeowner and a woman were leaving the home and getting into the homeowner's vehicle. As they were entering the vehicle, two masked men approached them. One of the men was in possession of a handgun and the other was in possession of a crowbar.
The man with the handgun struck the homeowner in head with the handgun and attempted to pull him out of the vehicle. As the suspect was pulling the homeowner out of the vehicle, the homeowner retrieved a handgun from inside the vehicle and fired multiple times, hitting the suspect in the torso. The suspect fired one shot, but missed the homeowner.
The suspect, identified by the medical examiner as Waymone Williams, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the shooting, the second suspect stole the woman's purse and fled.
The homeowner was rushed to St. Vincent Charity Hospital, where he was treated and released for a laceration to the head. The female victim was not injured.
The homeowner has a CCW permit.
The assailant picked on the wrong person and probably got what he deserved," said Cleveland councilman, Mike Polensek.
Residents are shocked by the attack, especially on such a respectful kid, that's never in any trouble.
"Very young, very nice kid. I've known him since he was around three of four years old," said neighbor.
Polensek thinks the opposite of his attackers.
"These predators that are out there, these two-legged rates that are out there trying to perpetrate crimes against innocent individuals," said Polensek.
