Three Springfield police officers escaped serious injuries after a man attacked them when an ax as they were responding to a call for help.
Springfield police said they were called to a home on Irvington Street for "unknown trouble" on Monday night.
They said when they arrived at the home, they were met by a man, later identified as 28-year-old Nicholas Montel. Police said Montel met them and blocked the path to get into the home. Police said he was visibly upset and nervous and told officers to leave.
At the same time, police said they heard a woman screaming "Help me! He's going to kill me!"
Police immediately pushed Montel to the side and entered the home. As they did that, police said they heard Montel yell "I'm going to kill you!"
At that point police said they noticed he was swinging an axe with his right hand. Three police officers were in the confined space with Montel, who came at one of the officers with the axe.
One of the officers grabbed his arm in an attempt to stop the attack, and Montel then grabbed another officer's throat and began to choke him with one arm, police said.
He then swung the axe again at the officer, only to be stopped from one of the other officers.
The officer being choked was able to break free and was pushed to the ground.
Police said Montel then came a the officer on the ground with the axe, and the two other officers shot him to stop the attack.
Montel was hit by the bullets but would not let go of the axe.
Montel struggled with officers but they were eventually able to control him.
As the police officers started to give Montel first aid, a woman at the home jumped on the officers and hindered them from performing the first aid.
Police were forced to arrest Erica Cartagena, 25, and charged her with disorderly conduct.
Montel was arrested and charged with two counts of assault and battery of a police officer and three counts with assault with intent to murder.
One of the officers was cut with the axe, but none of the three required hospitalization.
Montel was sent to a local hospital where he was placed under arrest and under police guard. He's listed in serious but stable condition.
