State health officials said Eastern Equine Encephalitis has been found in a horse for the first time this year. The horse was stabled in Belchertown.
The director of public health in the town said that they've placed signs in the town common, warning residents the threat level has been elevated to "critical."
This is Belchertown's second Triple "E" infected horse in two years.
Health officials say the fact a horse fell ill with Triple E means that humans are more at risk. The potentially fatal disease is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes.
The board of health there says so far they have not had to cancel any outdoor activities. They will keep an eye on the situation.
There have been no human cases of West Nile Virus or Triple "E" so far this year.
