FARMINGTON, CT (AP) -

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints plans to begin construction of its first temple in Connecticut this month.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 17 at the site off Route 4 in Farmington.

About 15,000 Mormons live in Connecticut, and the nearest Mormon temples are in New York City and Belmont, Mass., in the Boston area.

Wayne Taylor, president of the Connecticut congregation, said the 32,000-square-foot temple will take two years to build and feature New England architecture and paintings that represent the history of the church and the local area.

The Day of New London reports that Taylor said the location for the temple honors the Church's fourth president, Wilford Woodruff, who was born in Farmington.
