A Prescott Valley man died Monday when a shotgun he asked his wife to hand him discharged, striking him in his chest.
Prescott police said 56-year-old Gary Wingate was found shortly after 4:30 p.m. at his home in the 7700 block of Gentle Winds Road.
Wingate's 54-year-old wife told investigators she was uncomfortable handling the 12-gauge shotgun, but tried to hand it to her husband as he asked when the gun went off.
Police said the shooting appeared to be accidental but was being investigated as a homicide and that the Yavapai County Medical Examiner's Office would rule on the official cause and manner of death after the investigation.
