A veteran Ludlow Police Lieutenant was arrested by state police Thursday morning.

Lt. Thomas Foye, 49,  faces drug charges after allegedly breaking into the evidence room of his own department and stealing cocaine.

Hours after he was arraigned in Palmer district court denying those charges, Ludlow's acting Police Chief and friend of Foye, Pablo Madera stood outside police headquarters.

"I'm devastated," he said.

Madera says they started noticing something was wrong about a week ago but would not comment on what tipped them off.

They began an internal investigation and then called in the Attorney General's office.

Lt. Foye was arrested Thursday morning at police headquarters by state police troopers.

Madera described him as a "perfect gentleman" during the arrest.

"This is a traumatic event for us as a police agency. I would like the community to know that they can count on the Ludlow police department."

Just last year, Foye headed a conference with parents at the high school, warning them of a dangerous uptick in teen drug use in the town.

"We've probably reached a peak. I don't think it's ever been worse than it is now," Foye said in April of 2012.

Now facing allegations of his own, Foye was forced to hand in his department gun and FID card and submit to random drug testing until he's back in court in October.

Madera says that Foye has never has never had a problem in 26 year career.

He would not comment on Foye's job status as of right now.

He was promoted to Lt. back in May.

"I trained him, I started with him, he rode with me. I've been here 31 years, so I know everybody here personally, so it's devastating," Madera said.
