Valley Metro says it has reached a new record for people hopping on the buses and light rail trains in the Phoenix area.
Valley Metro spokeswoman Susan Tierney said there were more than 73.4 million people boarding in the last fiscal year, July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.
Tierney said that's 3.3 percent higher than last year and exceeded the previous record of 71.2 million boardings, set in 2009.
Earlier this month, workers went on a four-day strike before First Transit and ATU 1433 inked a tentative three-year agreement that defines the labor wages, benefits and work rules for the more than 500 operators who serve 57,000 daily riders in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and Tempe. These riders also travel into Phoenix and Scottsdale.
