PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A Phoenix fire truck responding to a house fire was involved in a collision with a small SUV in central Phoenix early Friday morning, injuring five people and closing a busy intersection.
The impact of the collision at Seventh Street and Indian School Road sent the fire truck on its side.
Four firefighters and the man driving the SUV were injured, though none of the injuries was considered life-threatening and all parties were expected to survive, said Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos.
The fire unit was on its way to a house fire at 13th Place and Devonshire Avenue about 3:15 a.m. when the collision happened, said Phoenix Fire Capt. Jonathan Jacobs.
The impact sent the SUV and the man driving it against a wall in a nearby gas station parking lot. The driver had to be extricated but was seen walking before he was taken to a Valley trauma center, Jacobs said.
The fire truck nipped a bus stop, but the driver was able to keep it in the roadway before it rolled, Jacobs said.
He said the firefighters were able to crawl through the windshield on their own and were up and walking, Jacobs said.
He said all patients are to be considered in serious condition because it was a rollover with heavy equipment, even though all appeared to be OK.
Martos said the intersection would be closed possibly through the morning rush hour for the investigation.
No other information was immediately available.
