HARTFORD, CT (AP) -

Connecticut gained jobs for a fifth straight month in July even as the unemployment rate rose slightly to 8.1%.

The state's Labor Department says nonfarm employment rose sharply last month with a gain of 11,500 jobs.

Andy Condon of the department's research office says it was 1 of the best job gains since a post-recession recovery began in February 2010. He says improvement was seen across most of the state's industry's sectors.

The state's jobless rate had held steady for the previous five months.

Officials say July was 1 of only two months this year when the state's civilian labor force expanded. Over the course of the recovery many other months reflected a reduction in the size of the labor pool.
