Convoy of Hope coming to Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The group "The Convoy of Hope" will be in Springfield to help those in need Saturday, and it's all free.

Volunteers with dozens of local churches set up white tents alongside the Connecticut River at Riverfront Park.

"They have a chapel, they can get haircuts, and groceries and shoes," said William Pentz, volunteer and parishioner at Bethany Assembly of God in Agawam.

It's not all about just the bare essentials.

Local companies like Future Works in Springfield will be on hand to help people find jobs and make resumes.

The Convoy of Hope makes its way across the country.

This year, they've already assisted 32,000 people and raised more than $50 million.

Here in Springfield, 35 churches and 25 businesses have stepped in to make it all possible with more than $1 million in services.

"I hope to reach some of the people. It's wonderful to see them come here, and we benefit as much as they do," said Richard Sabonis, volunteer and parishioner at Bethany Assembly of God.

Volunteers from Bethany Assembly of God spent much of their day making 5,000 sandwiches to pass out Saturday.

They say it's a small price to pay for a lot of good.

"They think no one cares, no one loves them. This is the thing to reach out. ... You talk to them, and it's just overwhelming, the expressions, the thanks on their face," Pentz said.

Needy people will also get access to a health screening, and if supplies run low, on Saturday they can meet with councilors on where to go next for help.

Volunteers say that they're looking forward to reaching out to thousands of people.

"I want to see people blessed and to see the looks on their faces, the gratitude for someone caring enough to provide these things," said volunteer and churchgoer, Chuck Darling.

The Convoy of Hope opens up at 10 a.m. Saturday at Riverfront Park in Springfield.
