Connecticut top court to hear Lapointe appeal

HARTFORD, CT (AP) -
The Connecticut Supreme Court will be hearing arguments in several widely publicized cases next month, including state prosecutors' request to reinstate the murder and rape convictions of a brain-damaged man in the 1987 killing of his ex-wife's 88-year-old grandmother.

The high court is set to hear Richard Lapointe's case on Sept. 17.

The state Appellate Court last year overturned the brain-damaged man's convictions and ordered a new trial, saying prosecutors suppressed evidence that may have supported an alibi for Lapointe. Lapointe's supporters say he could not have committed the killing of Bernice Martin in her Manchester apartment.

The Supreme Court will also hear arguments next month on whether Bridgeport School Superintendent Paul Vallas is qualified to hold his job and whether state officials violated a minimum staffing requirement for state troopers.
