LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
The brother-in-law of the California Highway Patrol officer who died trying to stop a carjacking on the Las Vegas Strip has also died.
Felix Brandon Cruz was taken to UMC in critical condition after Sunday's incident, but according to the hospital, died at 6:22 p.m. on Monday. The Clark County Coroner's office confirmed his identity on Tuesday.
CHP said Officer Jesus Magdaleno was set to wed in September before he was killed in the incident on Sunday.
Cruz and Magdaleno were in town to celebrate his bachelor party, according to the law enforcement agency.
According to Las Vegas Metro police, the incident started at about 11 a.m. when the officer's personal pick-up truck was in the Flamingo Casino and Hotel valet area.
A suspect got in the driver seat of the pick-up, prompting Magdaleno and Cruz to jump in the bed of the vehicle, according to authorities.
Police said the vehicle ran three red lights while heading westbound on Flamingo Road. The truck crashed into a sport-utility vehicle at Flamingo and Valley View Boulevard outside of the Rio hotel-casino, police said.
The collision caused the two victims in the bed to be ejected from the pick-up, police said.
Authorities said Magdaleno, 33, died at the scene. Cruz was taken to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
One witness said he saw the whole incident unfold from his hotel room.
"I would have let them take the car," said the witness. "I wouldn't have pursued him, but he's a cop, so he was trying to do his job."
The suspect and three people inside the SUV were also rushed to the hospital.
A spokesperson with California Highway Patrol said Magdaleno was an eight-year veteran with CHP and had spent three years in the Visalia, CA area. He served as a patrol officer and safety training officer, according to CHP.
The family of Brandon Cruz told FOX5 the attorney also from Visalia had a 4-year-old son and an eight-year-old stepson. Cruz's wife was also pregnant at the time of his death, his family said.
