A popular Middletown bar and restaurant will remain closed Tuesday as crews work to clean up following a fire Monday morning.
Typically it's beer that flows at Eli Cannon's Tap room, but Monday morning it was water from a sprinkler system.
"I looked out the window and there were fire trucks and cop cars everywhere," witness Victor Kromer said.
He lives above the bar, and works in the bar's kitchen. A passer-by saw flames coming from a third-floor apartment and called 911.
"I knew something was up," Kromer said. "I opened the door to look out and they were pounding on the doors in the hallway and said to leave. I woke my son up and we got out."
Middletown's fire chief said the building's sprinkler system contained the fire to that one apartment, but the water came right down through to the restaurant and into the basement where the electrical panels are located.
As a result of all the water, power needed to be cut and officials evacuated the 10 apartments located in the building.
"Water damage is our biggest problem," Eli Cannon's owner Phil Ouellette said. "We're glad to know it works well and nobody got hurt. That's the important thing."
Eli Cannon's is typically closed Monday, and Ouellette said it will remain closed Tuesday as they clean up and make repairs.
