Conn. Ethics office to audit lobbyists

Connecticut's Office of State Ethics is conducting its annual audit of certain state lobbyists.

The chairman of the Citizen's Ethics Advisory Board on Thursday is scheduled to select 10 client lobbyists to be audited. A client lobbyist is the individual entity that pays for lobbying services on its behalf and spends at least $2,000 in a calendar year on lobbying the General Assembly and state government.

In 2012, there were 1,077 registered client lobbyists in Connecticut.

There were 727 in-house communicator lobbyists and 109 individual communicators. Communicators are the people who receive payment and do the actual lobbying.

A total of $51.6 million was spent on lobbying in 2012, with 77 percent on legislative lobbying. The rest was spent lobbying the administration.

Health and hospitals was the top lobbying issue.
