NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - New London police say an alleged rape victim lied about being attacked in the downtown area last month.
Police told The Day newspaper (http://bit.ly/16QhjJt ) on Wednesday that the victim recanted her original statement that she was raped in a violent, random attack, and investigators believe she actually consented to a sexual act.
News of the reported attack fueled a perception that the downtown area is unsafe and led to calls for more police officers. The police department and mayor also were criticized for delaying the release of information about the alleged rape.
Deputy Police Chief Peter Reichard says detectives had suspicions about the woman's story from the start. He says police may consult with state prosecutors on whether the woman should face charges for making false statements.
