The mother of an Arizona stockbroker on trial in the 2008 killing of his former wife has testified that nearly all of $750,000 life insurance payout helped pay for her son's legal defense.
The Daily Courier reports that Janice DeMocker testified that two daughters transferred $700,000 of insurance payout to her and she then paid the money to defense lawyers who later stopped representing Steven DeMocker.
He is charged with murder in the bludgeoning death of Carol Kennedy. Prosecutors allege that DeMocker killed his former wife because he was deep in debt, wanted the insurance payout and didn't want to keep paying alimony.
The insurance company wouldn't make the payout to DeMocker because he was a suspect. It made the payout to the daughters only after DeMocker disclaimed it.
