PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A drunken driver will spend the next decade in prison for running over a pregnant woman and her unborn baby in a Phoenix parking lot last year.
Judge Margaret Mahoney sentenced Guadalupe Castaneda to 10 years in prison and five years of supervised probation for second-degree murder, aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an injury accident, as part of a plea deal, according to the Maricopa County Superior Court.
Police said Castaneda admitted to drinking 30 beers before climbing into his car, accelerating through a parking lot, and striking the expecting mother, Phoenix police said.
Officers arrived in the area of Bukkanas Bar at 1600 W. Camelback Rd. at about 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 25, 2013.
Castaneda also struck a parked vehicle and injured its occupant, police said.
Officers, with assistance from the police helicopter, followed the fleeing suspect until he stopped at 3300 W. Van Buren St. and taken into custody.
The unborn baby died. The mother survived.
