Students at Yale University are expected to rally in front of Gourmet Heaven, a deli on campus, after an investigation was launched to look into allegations that it stole tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid and overtime wages.
Students and activists said they will boycott the business until the owner pays back all of the back wages and meets workers' demands for a fair wage and working conditions.
"Some of the workers have worked here for nearly a decade, earning $4, $5 or $6 per hour," said Megan Fountain, a volunteer with New Haven Workers Association. "How many hundreds of thousands has the owner stolen from these workers, who are members of the New Haven community, who have families to support?"
According to Connecticut statutes, the owner will only be responsible for paying the past two years of service of unpaid wages when the investigation into the allegations concludes.
