Corner store opening in spot of former coffee shop in Hartford

Posted: Updated:

After a popular Hartford coffee shop closed, a neighbor is set to take over the Frog Hollow location once home to La Paloma.

The corner spot at Capital Avenue and Babcock Street will now be home to a corner store.

"Right now we have to go through zoning, have the inspectors, all that stuff," Willie Brimmage said. "It's a process. Have to cross every "t" and dot every "i"."

Capital Grocery is moving just a few doors down to take over the space that for years was home to La Paloma Sabanera, a popular coffee shop featuring live music and art.

Earlier this summer the coffee shop's owner decided to close over rent and building issues with an absentee landlord.

While the new grocery store and old coffee shop are two completely different businesses, people there said that for the spot to be successful, they will have to attract both state workers on Capital Avenue and those living in the area.

Brimmage lives on the block and said he's helping the grocery store's owner with the move.

He said sometimes at the old location, crowds would gather.

Hartford police said they have responded to that stretch on Capital Avenue many times before, and this past spring the members of the Food and Drug Administration cited Capitol Grocery for selling cigarettes to a minor.

"There were people hanging around giving him a bad name," Brimmage said. "But they've gotten rid of them and adding a more positive note with this corner store."

Channel 3 Eyewitness News was told that in addition to the new location, they plan on selling coffee, pastries and sandwiches when they open.
