DANBURY, CT (WFSB) -

A young student in Danbury is hospitalized for suspicious injuries, and two people are behind bars.

Police said an unidentified 8-year-old child had severe blisters and injuries on a foot, when he was examined by a Danbury school nurse.

A child told the nurse a man, who was staying at his home, put an unknown substance on the foot and in a shoe, police said.

School officials called police and the Department of Children and Families.

"Based on the student's initial statements and the finding of a foreign substance in their shoes, it was established that a crime had been committed," police said in a statement Friday.

Nelson Samaniego, 44, of New Haven was arrested and charged with risk of injury to a minor, second-degree assault and cruelty to persons. He is being held on $250,000 bond.

Vilma Samaniego, 33, of Danbury was also arrested and charged with risk of injury to a minor, hindering prosecution and interfering with police. She is being held on a $50,000 bond.

Both were arraigned at Danbury Superior Court on Thursday.

Police said it's not clear what that substance is.
